Week 18 - Liberty Jail

Hello everyone!

Well first of all, have any of you ever been outside, in a skirt, tracting in -15 degree-with-wind-chill weather? If not, just come on over to Missouri and join us! It is just the best, let me tell you what. This week I have been the coldest I have ever been in my entire life! We only went tracting one of the days two different times in the day, but the second time we were out for maybe 10 minutes and I felt like my nose was going to fall off. It was insane. All my layers didn’t even help much on those days! To describe what I have been wearing the last few days while outside: nylons, then wool tights, then leggings, then a warm slip, then a skirt in addition to warm socks and boots. Then also an undershirt, a long-sleeved shirt, a button-up shirt, a sweater, a jacket, my coat, then a scarf. I wish I could draw a diagram of all my layers for you, but I’m sure you can imagine. Usually I stay pretty toasty in my layers, but you can’t do much when it is that cold here! It just cuts right through you. Anyway. Can you tell I don’t like cold very much? But lots of people have been telling me this winter is unusually snowy and cold, so I am holding out hope for next year!

Enough of that. This week was good! We were still able to teach several lessons and find some great new people to teach regardless of the weather. We tracted into this one lady who has met missionaries before and we are going to go back to talk to this week. She was amazing! She has so much faith and humility it was amazing. I have not met that many people who are that close to God. You could feel the Spirit so strong in her home! She is practically a member of the church, she just doesn’t know it. So I am excited to talk to her again. It was crazy because when she answered the door I just knew that I had met/seen her before, but I haven’t as far as I know. Maybe I was meant to meet her!

We are still teaching quite a few Spanish investigators, including Blanca who is the woman who came into the jail on Christmas with her boyfriend. She knows it is true! She wants to be baptized, but her family back in Mexico is super Catholic and she told us she needs more time. We are going over tonight and she is going to cook us some yummy Mexican food, so that should be good! We are really working on getting people to church which is kind of a challenge right now because 1)it starts at 9 and 2)it has been below freezing the last 3 weeks on Sunday. But hopefully we can get some people there this week! Satan just knows that once you get people to church and befriending people in the ward, he loses a lot of power. So I think he works extra hard on preventing people (who are 100% excited to go on Saturday night) from coming on Sunday. But we won’t let him win!

Well, besides that, at the jail things have been super slow! There have been a couple of days where not a soul has come in during one of the shifts. That is unusual, usually at least a few people do. But I don’t blame them, if I wasn’t a missionary I would not be leaving my house in this cold! I did get to do a great tour yesterday though- Sis Blunt (my trainer) and her companion came in and brought one of their investigators. I had her help me and it was funny because she kept getting nervous and making me talk. It is funny because she taught me everything I know about the jail! But it is easy to forget when you have been gone a while. But anyway, it was great. Their investigator really had a good experience and I think it was a great turning point for him. It is so great to be a part of that!

Well, I will end with a funny story. So we were at one of our investigator’s homes the other day and his granddaughter kept talking while we were teaching (she is like 3 or 4). At one point John, our investigator, was talking to Sister Jacobs and the little girl leans over and kind of whispers to me,holding a lesson 2 pamphlet with Jesus on the front and pointing to him, “Next time can you bring Jesus with you?” It was the cutest thing ever. She was so sincere and serious about it. I told her we would try our hardest. But it is funny how little kids can recognize that we really are His servants, I have had many experiences so far where kids are just drawn to me and my companion. They are so pure and innocent!

Anyway, I hope you all are having a good week! I love you!
