Today we were really tired even when we woke up, so we decided to take it easy (well, semi-easy) today. We went to call at 10 and talked about some history of English and of England, Then at 11 we had a guest lecturer- Dr. Laura Wright from Cambridge University. I was sad that we couldn’t actually go to Cambridge to hear it, but she lives in London so she came to us. She talked about shopping in London in the 16-18th centuries, which sounds like a strange topic, but it was all about the language they used. One interesting thing she talked about was that the shop owners used to have signs hanging outside indicating what they sold. But at one point the government started the numbering of buildings and made everyone take the signs down because of the potential of falling down and hurting people. before the numbering they used names for their buildings, which is why pubs have such interesting names- they often have kept their original building names.
After class we went home and rested for a bit. Then we decided we would go to high tea at the Orangery, which is a tea house/restaurant at Kensington palace. It is pretty close to our flat, so the four of us (Robyn, me, Mandy and Marissa) got a little dressed up and walked over there. We got there a little early for the afternoon tea which started at 3, so we just ordered drinks and chatted for a while until we could get the afternoon menu. We then ordered and it was the only time I have ever ordered tea at a restaurant. Marissa and I got peppermint and Robyn and Mandy got Chamomile. We also got some amazing scones with clotted cream (my fav) and some came, which was also amazing. We all sort of felt a little bit like we didn’t belong, but I guess that is to be expected from some naïve Mormon girls such as us. As Marissa said at one point “I feel like we are playing dress up in our mothers’ clothes and having a tea party.” It was just funny because we didn’t really know what to do, but we figured it out eventually. After we were finished they didn’t bring the check forever, so we chatted again. I discovered that Marissa (also and Elang major) and I have actually had 3 classes together but we never realized it. Also, last Fall Robyn and I had a religion class with Mandy. Small campus!
We then went home and prepared for our next excursion- going to Les Mis! We had to go an hour early to get student tickets, so we rode to Piccadilly Circus (my favorite station because of the way the recorded lady says it) and got our tickets. They were on the top balcony, and the theater was so steep and tall that I felt like I was going to fall to my death the entire time. And of course two rows in front of me was a girl who was sitting at the front of here seat the whole time and blocking the view of the girl one row in front of me, who kept moving her head side to side so much I just wanted to smack her upside the head. But besides that, the show was great! I was excited to see it done so professionally because I was in Les Mis in high school and I know the show well. All the actors had amazing voices, which I guess is to be expected if you are in that show. Just a note- if you notice I have gone to 6 shows so far in London with more to come! I love my life.
