Day 9

Today was not too very eventful. We got to the Hyde Park chapel right before 9 to find a few people from our class and Dr. Chapman outside- they were supposed to have the building opened for us for our class to start at 9. However, the guard doesn’t even show up until around 9:30, so he decided to change our class time to 10 am. Yay! So we had class and talked about descriptivism vs. prescriptivism, which is one of my favorite linguistic topics. One of my favorite things about this program is that there are so many non-Elang or Linguistics majors on it, but they are now forced to listen to people speak and comment about it. And they get excited! And they make comments in class! This is really exciting to me because I don’t feel like such a nerd.

After class Robyn and I ate our lunches that we had made earlier (Robyn was REALLY excited about our lunches), and then we went with Marissa and Mandy to get something for them to eat, and we also got some really good pastries. Then since it was a rainy and blustery day (which pretty much every day has been so far), we decided to go to one of the museums that were right there. We went to the Victoria and Albert museum since it is on our list of sights we have to see while in London for our class. It was interesting- we went to the exhibits on fashion, photography, and jewelry mainly, and we also walked around the medieval room which had a bunch of plaster statues and arches and stuff. I fully believe you could spend a few days in a museum that huge and still not see everything in it.

After the museum we went back to our flat and just relaxed and took naps. It is tiring to travel and walk around a lot. At around 6 we left to go to Pygmalion which we went to with our whole class. It was at the Old Vic theater in Southwark, not to be confused with the Young Vic which was across the street. It was pretty good- I have never seen Pygmalion so I was comparing it to My Fair Lady most of the time and semi-wishing it had songs, but alas, it is not a musical. There were these really obnoixious school children behind us and a couple who kept making out in front of us, but besides that it was a really good theatrical experience. J We ended the day by going back to our flats and eating PB & J’s because we were really hungry.
