Day 31

Today is the last day of July! Wow time has flown. Before I know it I will be back in the states and back to school. But today some of the group went on an optional day trip, but Robyn and I decided against it. We weren’t really all that interested in the sights they were going to, and I figured since we are going to be sitting on a bus for a whole week starting Monday I would pass. I went with Robyn over to the London Centre- the housing for the other study abroad program here which is right across Kensington Gardens from us- because she had to pick up something for our group. It was really nice! I was kind of jealous when I saw it but then I remembered that they have rooms with like 14 people in them and I wasn’t jealous anymore. But we talked to their director and some of the girls in that program and it was fun. After that we walked around some and ended up on High Street Kensington where we went into some stores so I could get a shirt to match my skirt for Sunday. I went to H&M for the first time (lame I know) and I really like that store! I am sad it isn’t anywhere I live. We then went to Wagamama for the second time of the trip for lunch.

After shopping and such we went back to the flat to work on our dialect presentation. Everyone in our group has to pair up with someone and do a presentation and paper on some dialect of English. Ours is Southern English English (so English in Southern England) and Estuary English in particular. I was working on a chart about differences between American and Estuary vocabulary, and I couldn’t find anything! Then I realized I was stupid because I was living near tons and tons of people who speak this dialect, so duh, the vocab differences are the ones we already know like loo for bathroom and chips for French fries. Anyway. So at about 5 we went to Piccadilly Circus because we wanted to get some souvenirs for people and we knew they had a bunch of places there. After a while I ended up with 2 things for myself and nothing for really anyone else. But don’t worry, I will find something really good, I can feel it. We then walked down The Strand (a street) and got tickets for our show of the night, The Female of the Species. We then went to dinner at this restaurant called Stranded in London. Get it? I thought it was amazing! Stranded on the Strand! We went to the show, and it was hilarious! It was also fun because in the cast were Eileen Atkins (for Jourdan- she is the grandma in What a Girl Wants), Sophie Thompson (sister of Emma and in Emma and Persuasion), and Anna Maxwell Martin (Becoming Jane). So I felt privileged to be in the company of such accomplished actors.
